NYC's Asian Population Grows, Spreads Out

New York City's Asian population is growing in both size and complexity, according to a report being released Friday, spreading out from traditional strongholds like Chinatown into neighborhoods all over the five boroughs and including ethnicities that weren't even big enough to be counted merely 10 years ago.

The Asian American Federation, a civic and advocacy group, analyzed data from the 2010 and 2000 U.S. census as well as the 2006-2010 American Community Survey.

The foundation's report found that the city's population of people identifying themselves as Asian, either monoracially or mixed, had gone up to 1.135 million, up more than 262,000, between 2000 and 2010, a 30 percent increase and the biggest percentage increase among the city's racial and ethnic groups.

Neighborhoods with concentrated Asian populations could be found all over the city, both in neighborhoods like Flushing in Queens, which has had a strong Asian presence for years, as well as newer neighborhoods like Sunset Park in Brooklyn.

Asians are likely to become the largest ethnic group in the borough sometime in the next decade.

The ethnic groups that make up the bulk of the community — including Chinese, Indian, Korean, Filipino — all continued to grow, as did ethnic groups that number under 10,000 people — like Thai, Indonesian, Sri Lankan, Cambodian. The census was even able to count small communities of Hmong, at 83 people. It also noted Bhutanese, at 388, who largely weren't even in the United States to be counted in the 2000 census, according to the report.

Avoiding Cross-Cultural Pitfalls Vital to Business Success, KRW International Expert Explains
Multicultural Business Authority and Author Susan Bloch Joins KRW Team to Help Clients Avoid International Blunders and Thrive in a Global Marketplace

Press Release Source: KRW International On Thursday July 14, 2011, 9:30 am EDT

MINNEAPOLIS and SEATTLE, July 14, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- As more and more companies span the world the challenge to grab a share of the marketplace is increasing. And in these tough economic times many Western firms and governments are looking to the East to attract foreign investors. That in itself is difficult, but one major slip can doom a whole deal.

U.S. executives risk losing business by seeing the world through "American eyes." They may see India and China only as markets for labor, for example, and fail to capitalize on local consumers' growing purchasing power. They can fail to secure a business deal in Middle East based on governance nuances, or watch a promising alliance sour in Australia by showing up for a lunch meeting dressed too formally and refusing a social drink.

These are some of the pitfalls high-level executives face as they lead organizations in a global landscape laden with volatility and complexity, but ripe with potential. Behaving and communicating appropriately with foreign counterparts is vital to success. Susan Bloch, a multicultural business expert and author, has joined KRW International's management team to help clients avoid missteps and thrive in an international marketplace. Bloch brings more than 20 years of experience in cross-border business to KRW International, the Minneapolis-based pioneer in the field of executive coaching and senior leadership consulting.

"We help these executives understand what some of the really practical strategies are to making the world work together," says Bloch, who has worked in more than a dozen countries alongside C-suite executives. "It is a diverse world, and you must be able to work and communicate with people who have different mindsets, as well as cultural, religious and gender in order to get the job done."

Another challenge Bloch helps today's companies and business leaders solve is moving "from international to global," she adds. When moving from an international to a global mindset, Bloch explains that companies must realize that there are deep, essential differences between the two. "You should also understand how to approach systems and problem-solving and creating organizations and cultures," she said. "Because many companies see significant revenue opportunities outside the United States they need a strong leadership team that recognizes and responds to new opportunities and has the capability to execute a global strategy."

Bloch will work with KRW clients worldwide. She has been operating out of London and Mumbai as a trusted advisor for executive teams in the Fortune 500 and FTSE 200, around the globe. KRW Managing Partner Kelly Garramone adds: "Susan Bloch is a tremendous resource who has interviewed literally hundreds of global leaders for advice and best practices. KRW can now bring those lessons to help senior executives shorten their learning curves."

Bloch, co-author of the books "The Global You," "How to Manage in a Flat World," and "Complete Leadership," wields her expertise to examine how a senior leadership team is connecting with people and to understand the impact they are having. "Once executives raise their awareness to understand the impact they are making on their teams they can make decisions as how to enhance their own and their team's capability," Bloch says. She most recently worked with two global Indian conglomerates, providing high-level curriculum design and development expertise, as well as one-on-one and top-team coaching.

Garramone says senior leaders are drawn to KRW International because they see value in having access to people like Bloch. "She is a trusted advisor who is going to be with them over time, and can help them plot a course toward strategic clarity and alignment and enable them to strengthen their leadership bench."
Diversity option are always being explored by an enlighthened society. I think this requirement will help ethnic children better identify with
Colorado To Require Day Care Centers to Have Dolls of Different Races
By Gene Demby on Jul 12th 2011 1:58PM

Colorado just released a host of new rules for its daycare centers, including requiring that the have dolls of at least three different races.

The rules are part of 98-page list of regulations meant to standardize and improve the state's daycare centers. (Colorado is ranked 43rd in child care oversight, according to the National Center of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies.)

But as with any government regulations --- and especially those involving race --- some folks are not too keen on the new guidelines, saying they restrict their choices and could even force some centers out of business. Meredith Carroll at Strollerderby thinks that "requiring dolls of at least three different races seems a bit silly (why not transgender or handicapped dolls, too, while they're at it?)."

But what, exactly, does Carroll find so "silly"about that notion? While some of the regulations might place onerous burdens on daycare centers, it's not clear what the practical objection might be to object to about the rules on multi-ethnic dolls. The attendant costs would be almost negligible compared to the larger costs of running a daycare center. But the social costs might be incalculable. We know toys play an important role in helping lay the foundation for how people understand gender and race. Five decades after the famous study in which black girls chose white dolls to play with over black ones, dolls remain the focus of subtle signalling about race, beauty and acceptability.

Having the dolls doesn't solve all of the problems around teaching diversity --- the universe of possible cringeworthy, racefail moments boggles the mind --- but it's a good first step, and a pittance to pay to make sure some children don't feel needlessly alienated

Fears grow as millions lose U.S. jobless benefits

On Wednesday July 14, 2010, 1:35 am EDT

	By Nick Carey

CINCINNATI (Reuters) - Deborah Coleman lost her unemployment benefits in April, and now fears for millions of others if the Senate does not extend aid for the jobless.

"It's too late for me now," she said, fighting back tears at the Freestore Foodbank in the low-income Over-the-Rhine district near downtown Cincinnati. "But it will be terrible for the people who'll lose their benefits if Congress does nothing."

For nearly two years, Coleman says she has filed an average of 30 job applications a day, but remains jobless.

"People keep telling me there are jobs out there, but I haven't been able to find them."

Coleman, 58, a former manager at a telecommunications firm, said the only jobs she found were over the Ohio state line in Kentucky, but she cannot reach them because her car has been repossessed and there is no bus service to those areas.

After her $300 a week benefits ran out, Freestore Foodbank brokered emergency 90-day support in June for rent. Once that runs out, her future is uncertain.

"I've lost everything and I don't know what will happen to me," she said.

	my comment:

The Jobless Problem is not Destined, There is a $10 monthly option to change these stats. go to www.juniques.ws

The recession -- the worst U.S. downturn since the 1930s -- has left some 8 million people like Coleman out of work.

Unemployment has remained stubbornly high at around 9.5 percent. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in June 6.8 million people or 45.5 percent of the total are long-term unemployed, or jobless for 27 weeks or more.

Before the recession began in late 2007, the unemployed received benefits, usually a few hundred dollars a week, for 26 weeks or around six months after losing their jobs.

Under the federal/state programs, which are administered by state governments and partly funded by taxes on business, only full-time workers are eligible for benefits. Within federal guidelines, benefits and eligibility vary from state to state.

As the downturn left more Americans out of work for longer periods, Congress voted to provide funding to extend benefits to as long as 99 weeks in some areas.

Some critics say this adds to the country's large fiscal deficit, and may even discourage job-seeking.

	my comment:

The Jobless Problem is not Destined, There is a $10 monthly option to change these stats. go to www.juniques.ws

	FOOD BANKS FEAR STRAIN

An attempt to pass another extension has become bogged down in partisan political bickering in the Senate. Relief agencies fear that failure to extend benefits will strain their resources and may worsen the U.S. housing crisis.

"This will put a great deal of stress and strain on our organization, which has already been working hard," said Vicki Escarra, chief executive of Feeding America, which has a network of more than 200 food banks. In the year ended June 30, Feeding America distributed 3 billion pounds (1.36 billion kg) of food, a 50 percent increase over the past two years.

	my comment:

The Jobless Problem is not Destined, There is a $10 monthly option to change these stats. go to www.juniques.ws

The benefits debate has pitted the majority of Democrats against most Republicans and some conservative Democrats.

When the House of Representatives passed a $34 billion benefit extension on July 1, 11 fiscally conservative Democrats voted against it. The Senate may take up the issue again in mid-July, but Republicans like Senator Tom Coburn have argued any extension must be paid for with cuts elsewhere.

"Even then he (Coburn) is not sure if that's a good idea," said John Hart, a spokesman for the Oklahoma senator. "The longer the unemployed have benefits, the less incentive there is to find a job."

Most economists argue that cutting benefits could slow recovery, describing benefits as direct economic stimulus because almost every penny of it gets spent. In a June 28 client note, Goldman Sachs said if all additional U.S. stimulus spending expires, it could slow the economy up to 1.5 percentage points from the fourth quarter 2010 to the second quarter of 2011.

The note added that extending unemployment benefits and a $400 tax credit would "substantially mitigate" that impact.

3 MILLION CUT OFF IN TWO MONTHS

During the Senate impasse, from the week ended June 5 to the week ended July 10, more than 2.1 million Americans lost their benefits. Another million will join them by July 31.

In Ohio alone, where unemployment stood at 10.7 percent in May, more than 83,000 people lost their benefits in June.

Sister Barbara Busch, executive director of non-profit housing group Working in Neighborhoods in Cincinnati, 65 percent of the people who come seeking help with their mortgages are unemployed or underemployed.

"I fear once the benefits run out, I suspect we'll see a new wave of foreclosures," she said. "I just hope I'm wrong."

Ohio is a bellwether U.S. state in elections. The state's Democratic attorney general Richard Cordray said blocking extending jobless benefits was politically motivated ahead of the midterm elections in November.

"If people lose their benefits they will blame the congressional majority and the administration," he said. "As unappetizing as it is, that would appear to be the strategy."

Senator Coburn's spokesman Hart said suggestions the Republicans were playing partisan politics were "ludicrous."

"The Democrats say that because they want to avoid making the hard decisions," he said.

Alonzo Allen, 55, a former aid agency worker in Cincinnati whose benefits will run out in September, spends two days a week volunteering at the food bank in Over-the-Rhine and the other three looking for work. He said he worries about the one-bedroom apartment he rents and how he will feed his dog Ginger, who is the "only family I have."

"If the benefits stop, I'll be out on the street and I'll lose all my furniture," he said. "That's going to be tough."

This is an interesting review of how a thriving bird, went from being able to fly to flightless to extinction.

Not adjusting to changes in it environment, it perished.

Business owners sometimes allow themselves to suffer the same outcome.

You must adapt to your changes and use your resources.

	I found a great resource at www.juniques.ws

These webservices allow me to adapt to marketing and promoting changes, two business areas that greatly impact my success.

The Dodo is a lesson in extinction. First sighted around 1600 on Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean, the Dodo was extinct less than eighty years later.

There are no complete Dodo specimens. Some of the birds may have been eaten by the Dutch sailors who discovered them. However, the primary causes of their extinction were the destruction of the forest (which cut off the Dodo's food supply), and the animals that the sailors brought with them, including cats, rats, and pigs, which destroyed Dodo nests.

The Dodo's stubby wings and heavy, ungainly body tell us that the bird was flightless. Moreover, its breastbone is too small to support the huge pectoral muscles a bird this size would need to fly. Yet scientists believe that the Dodo evolved from a bird capable of flight into a flightless one. When an ancestor of the Dodo landed on Mauritius, it found a habitat with plenty of food and no predators. It therefore did not need to fly, and, as flying takes a great deal of energy, it was more efficient for the bird to remain on the ground. Eventually, the flightless Dodo evolved.

Scientists at the American Museum of Natural History and other institutions around the world continue to study and document the impact of human activities on the environment. It is hoped that the lesson of the Dodo can help prevent similar extinctions, and aid us in preserving the diversity of life on earth.
They share your pain when gas prices soar but not your nostalgia for service bays. And although they accept debit cards, using one might cost more than you think.

	1. "Good luck finding the best deal."

When it comes to gas prices, most stations are branded -- meaning the name of a major oil company hangs out front -- and must buy gas from their proprietary company. They can't shop around.

With a lock on sales, the oil companies charge each station a different price depending on various factors, such as the station's competition and its location. That means a station might have to pay a lot more than one down the street, and that cost gets passed along to you.

And you'd be wise to shop around because with prices constantly in motion, the cheapest gas may not be at the same station every time.

	2. "I hate it when gas prices go up."

Stations earn, on average, 10 to 15 cents on a gallon of gas. Ironically, they earn the least when prices are highest. When fuel climbs, gas stations usually must shrink their profit margins to remain competitive, meaning they earn less per gallon.

But another big cost during tough times is something they can't do anything about: credit card fees, which add up to about 2.5% of all purchases. When gas is at, say, $2 a gallon, stations pay credit card companies 5 cents a gallon; when gas hits $3, that fee becomes 7.5 cents, at least half of the stations' average profits.

"Those credit card fees are miserable for the gas station business," says Mohsen Arabshahi, who owns five Southern California stations.

How do station owners make up for lost revenue? "Prices go up like a rocket and come down like a feather," says Richard Gilbert, a professor of economics at the University of California, Berkeley. For several weeks after wholesale prices drop, stations can earn as much as 20 cents a gallon before retail prices are lowered to reflect the change.

	3. "My gas isn't better for your car; it's just more expensive."

Oil companies spend lots of money explaining why their gas is better than the competition's. Chevron's gas, for example, is fortified with Techron, and Amoco Ultimate is supposed to save the planet along with your engine. But today, more than ever, one gallon of gas is as good as the next.

True, additives help to clean your engine, but what the companies don't tell you is that all gas has them. Since 1994, the government has required that detergents be added to all gasoline to help prevent fuel injectors from clogging.

State and local regulators keep a close watch to make sure those standards are met; a 2005 study indicated that Florida inspectors checked 45,000 samples to ensure the state's gas supply was up to snuff, and 99% of the time it was.

"There's little difference between brand-name gas and any other," AAA spokesman Geoff Sundstrom says.

What's more, your local Chevron station may sell gas refined by Shell or Exxon Mobil. Suppliers share pipelines, so they all use the same fuel. And the difference between the most expensive brand-name gas and the lowliest gallon of no-brand fuel? Often just a quart of detergent added to an 8,000-gallon tanker truck.

	4. "If you're smart, you'll put that debit card away."

Your debit card might be a convenient way to pay for gas, but it's a no-win proposition. When you swipe a debit card at the pump, the bank doesn't know how much money you'll be spending until you've finished pumping. So to make sure you have the funds to cover the purchase, some stations ask banks to automatically set aside some of your money: That amount can be $20 or more. That means even if you just topped off your tank for $10, you could be out $30, $50 or even $100 until the station sends over its bulk transactions, which can take up to three days. If your funds are running low, you might end up bouncing a check in the meantime, even though you had the money in your account.

Unfortunately, paying inside with your debit card isn't much of a solution either. Many banks charge their customers 50 cents to $1 for the privilege of using their debit card in any PIN-based transaction. The American Bankers Association estimates only 13% of consumers pay these fees, but critics say the practice is on the rise and that consumers are often unaware of these charges.

We track gasoline prices at more than 90,000 gasoline and convenience stores across the United States, using actual credit card transactions.

	5. "Don't even consider applying for our gas card."

When it comes to gasoline credit cards, a little research goes a long way. The good deals are great, but the bad deals are really bad. Similar to store cards issued through retailers, gas cards are riddled with drawbacks, says Curtis Arnold, the founder of CardRatings.com. Annual percentage rates are high, starting above 20%; many don't offer rebates on gas purchases; and they often lack standard protections such as fraud monitoring and zero liability for unauthorized transactions.

What about a Visa or MasterCard affiliated with a gasoline brand such as Exxon or BP? They often offer lower interest rates and significant rebates but limit your ability to shop around.

Further, the deals on cards are constantly changing. CardRatings.com is a good place to find updated information.
